Rise of the Tomb Raider is the sequel to the stellar Tomb Raider reboot from 2013.Starring the young archaeologist Lara Croft, this action-adventure game takes place one year after her adventure in Yamatai. This time, Lara sets out to the lost city of Kitezh to recover the Divine Source, an ancient artifact with the power to grant immortality. With a focus on combat and survival, this game plays a lot like its predecessor.
And that’s a good thing. Rise of the Tomb Raider improves and refines everything that made the original great while adding more systems to play with. Unsurprisingly, it already is one of the best games for Mac of 2018 so far.Feral Interactive did an excellent job with Rise of the Tomb Raider’s Mac port, but unlike the previous 2013 reboot, this is a demanding game. Our benchmark results (in FPS). Have you ever heard of Amnesia: The Dark Descent? Well, SOMA is the latest horror game from that same developer, and in my opinion, it’s their best game yet.SOMA is a first-person shooter that takes place in an underwater research facility. It’s Rapture meets the Nostromo, and that’s the best part of the game.
The horror and tension come from the environments here, not the characters. The game will ask you to go from one end of the facility to the other to discover what happened to all the missing employees along the way. Similar to Outlast, there are no weapons, and you can’t fight back.
You can only hide from the monsters or—eventually—run.Frictional Games did a fine job with SOMA’s Mac version. This is a good-looking game with system requirements that aren’t too high. Our benchmark results (in FPS).
Does this need an introduction? There’s a reason why this MMORPG from Blizzard is one of the most famous games ever created.WoW defined the genre 10 years ago and continues to evolve and compete with the many MMOs that have come and gone in its wake.
In WoW, you create a character, complete quests, and kill baddies to level up and become stronger. Once you’ve reached your maximum level, the real fun begins.
You can take part in “raids,” which are basically harder dungeons with tougher bosses and more powerful gear. Word of caution: This game is so good, it can be extremely addictive. I once lost around 6 months of my life playing WoW!Blizzard did a great job with WoW’s Mac version and the game should run on most modern Macs, especially now that it supports Metal. Our benchmark results (in FPS). It was a sad day when DiRT 3 suddenly became unavailable. That game had a special place in this Top 3 and for months I wondered how we could ever replace it.Turns out we only had to wait for a few months until DiRT Rally was released for Mac. With sophisticated handling and high-risk, high-reward gameplay, this game will challenge you. But you can always change a few settings and assists to turn it into a more casual game if you’d prefer.Dirt Rally also features impressive graphics with photo-realistic cars and beautifully rendered tracks.Feral Interactive clearly put Apple’s Metal API to good use because, in spite of looking great, Dirt Rally has surprisingly low system requirements. Our benchmark results (in FPS).
Because of the success of the original Pillars of Eternity, expectations were incredibly high. But developer Obsidian delivered, raising over $4 Million from over 33,000 backers.Pillars of Eternity 2 is not only a worthy successor, it improved upon everything the original game did. This is still an old-school game, reminiscent of the golden age of classic RPGs, but it plays better, looks better and has brand-new naval combat.Pillars of Eternity 2 also features real-time gameplay, an elevated camera angle, detailed party customizations, and tons of dialogue. This game has all the ingredients to do old-school RPGs justice. Pillars of Eternity may look and feel old-school, and that might turn you off. But don’t be fooled by appearances. This is a great game that tells a great story, and if you’re into RPGs, you owe it to yourself to try it.Also, Obsidian Entertainment did an excellent job on Pillar of Eternity’s 2 Mac version.
The port is bug-free and easy on the system requirements. Our benchmark results (in FPS). Borderlands 2 is hands down the best first-person shooter in the Borderlands series.Sure, Borderlands: The Pre-sequel came out to replace it, but why fix something that ain’t broke? If you’re looking for the best Borderlands game, this is it.Borderlands 2 combines first-person shooter gameplay with RPG elements, creating one hell of an experience. This game is all about killing enemies to find cool weapons. If Diablo and Halo had a baby, it would look something like this. Killing baddies to find that fire legendary gun you wanted is tons of fun, but Borderlands 2 is even better when you’re playing it with friends. Borderlands 2 is best experienced as a four-player co-op multiplayer.Borderlands 2’s Mac version is a good looking game too, and you will need some horsepower to run it properly. Our benchmark results (in FPS).
Testing Conditions: We tested the game using Medium settings, 2X Anisotropic Filtering, FXAA, and 1280×800 resolution:Can your Mac run it? You’ll need either a MBP from 2013 onwards or one of the latest MacBooks or MBA.Any bugs you should be aware of? The game sometimes crashes on the start menu. Stardew Valley is the country-life RPG that took everyone by surprise, shattering sales records on Steam. This pixelated farming simulator is a tribute to the old Harvest Moon games and follows a boy who inherits a farm.
But compared to Harvest Moon, it’s a much more detailed and complex game, which is amazing considering it was entirely created by one person.Stardew Valley is an open-ended game and gives you control over everything: the design of your farm, the kinds of animals and crops to raise, etc. For months I wondered how an old-looking game about a farmer could be any fun. Well, turns out Stardew Valley is addictive and fun, no matter your gaming preferences.Plus, as the game uses retro-looking graphics, Stardew Valley version can be played on most Macs, including older models. Our benchmark results (in FPS). Civilization 5 was one of my favorite strategy games of all times and yet Civilization 6 managed to top it.In Civ 6, you take control of an entire civilization. You get to create cities, raise armies, research technologies, build an economy, and expand your empire. Civ 6 may not be the most detailed Mac strategy game on the market (that honor goes to Europa Universalis 4), but it’s certainly the most fun.Everyone feared Civ 6 would simply ride Civ 5’s coattails, but thankfully, it didn’t. Firaxis managed to create something that feels both familiar and fresh at the same time.
Civ 6 brings welcome additions such as complex city-planning and hundreds of other improvements. Also, Civ 6 also sports improved graphics, making it the best-looking turn-based strategy game today. The downside is that you will need some horsepower to run it smoothly. Our benchmark results (in FPS). Testing Conditions: We tested the game using Medium Performance impact, Medium Memory impact, MSAA 2X Anti-Aliasing, and 1280×800 resolution. Can your Mac run it? Unfortunately, Civ 6 suffers from MacOS’s aging OpenGL graphics API, which is why the game is incredibly demanding. Only those with a high-end Mac will be able to enjoy itAny bugs you should be aware of? You can expect a smooth, bug-free experience.Verdict: Very Demanding.
Fortnite seems to be everywhere right now. Everyone is either playing it or talking about it. But give it a chance, and you’ll understand what the fuss is all about. In Fortnite Battle Royale (the free PvP mode), you and up to 99 opponents are dropped into a giant map where you’ll have to find randomly placed weapons, shields, and resources to survive until you’re the last person (or squad) standing. Battle Royale games are all the rage right now and new ones appear each week. Still, I’m confident Fortnite will remain the most popular choice for a long time. This is a solid game with great shooting mechanics and a strong community and you really can play it for free and be successful.Fortnite also features detailed environments and good-looking, albeit cartoonish, graphics that really make you wonder how Fortnite can be free at all. The Mac version of the game is stable but it’s clearly not as well optimized as the Windows version.
To play it, you’ll need a recent Mac.Our benchmark results (in FPS). Testing Conditions: We tested the game using Medium settings, 100% 3D Resolution, V-Sync Off and 1280×800 resolution:Can your Mac run it? Fortnite is quite demanding. Even our 2016 MacBook Pro couldn’t manage 30 FPS (the absolute minimum required for a fast-paced online shooter). The Mac performance of the game keeps improving with every new update, but performance is low.Any bugs you should be aware of? Not exactly a bug, but be aware that performance is terrible as soon as your character jumps from the bus. Be patient and wait a few minutes until performance improves and FPS stabilize.Verdict: Very DemandingSystem Requirements: OS 10.12.6 and a machine that supports Metal, 2.4 GHz Intel Core i3 Processor, 4 GB RAM, Intel HD 4000 or better. Overnight success stories of indie games that appear of nowhere and captivate are nothing new.
But even if great indies are released every month, few are become as insanely popular as Cuphead, a run and gun action game from.Cuphead turned a few heads early on because of its unique looks. This game looks like it came out straight from one of those old school cartoons from the 1930s. Not only was it the first time someone tried it, Cuphead completely nailed it.
But this game is not only about looks. Cuphead also nailed its run and gun gameplay, featuring very precise controls that you’ll need as every level and boss are extremely challenging.

There is nothing that is just relaxing and fun.I can’t find anything developed for females.
Women and girls often like games that are easier to do, have some story line, not dark, and they “create” something. On Big Fish they have some games that are really good for that, especially Time Management. Hidden Object games seem like they are made because they are quick and lazy – they are just too boring.I am really tired of Mac/Apple focusing on men. If it is a guy creating a game, get your girlfriend or wife involved and get feedback on what women like. I enjoy playing games every day. But Big Fish no longer can get games that are designed for a Mac. I am very frustrated.
I’ll probably have to buy a used Windows machine just for that, which seems pretty stupid since I paid so much for this Macbook Pro.Sometimes it’s nice to just sit and relax, have something challenging – and PLEASE no hidden object games – they are the most boring.Something with a story line, something that has a challenge, but not blow them up war games, or weapons shooting fire, I mean, really, are there no developers who might find it quicker and easier to make a game women might enjoy and still get the same money? I don’t think most of the developers even think about females. They are usually guys and usually want to blow something up.
It’s like they”re five-year-olds again.Maybe you can refer me to something that is for women who ARE over half the entire world population.I’m certainly above average in intelligence, but I still like a game that is challenging but not blow them up-type games. There are a lot of us who DO play games to RELAX, not to get all hyped up. I do have a daughter in her 30s, and she and her old boyfriend often played those blow-them-up games. Now, she is doing other things, but the guys seem to hang onto those games, even when they’re older.Me, I’m, obviously, older if my daughter is 30.
I know lots of women who like a challenge, but who also hate those “hidden object” games. What is the challenge there?Big Fish (I have written to them numerous times to get the developers on board to make more Mac games) but Apple seems to want to push people (especially males) into their own games that are not often good. Well, I’m sure guys who like to blow things up love them, but I and others just want something they can play, relax with but still challenged, and not have some blow-up guy’s game.Maybe you could do an article based on that: women’s games. I hate to divide it into genders, but there is a difference.Anyway, I can see why you chose what you did, but I also think there is a bias toward men.
Maybe you have a woman friend/wife/girlfriend who plays games and ask her to give feedback and also ask her friends. Most women I know are not into blow-them-up games. They usually want something that is challenging but not intense, like a bomb game. It’s just frustrating to see what Apple puts out. It is obviously male-oriented. We ARE over half the population, and we DO play games. I feel like guys think women/females are too stupid or boring to play a game. BUT we DO like to play games, just not war games, or things that are intense.
Remember, women are the ones who are relegated to do a LOT for the family AND are also often working a full-time job.I hate to mention gender differences because people want to be politically correct, but sometimes that’s just how it is. We are NOT the same. Please take this into consideration. I’m just tired of either games that they want you to “pay” for ongoing (which is absolutely criminal – to me), or 90% based on males, and women are funneled into a narrow tunnel of “cute” games without any challenge. It’s not you, obviously, it’s just that I get tired of hearing about male-oriented games.
Women do a lot. They need some down time, too, but because they often take on so many responsibilities, they like something that is not “easy” but relaxing. For me, I’ve often used these particular games as my relaxation backup:Cake Shop; Chocolatier; Jessica’s Cupcake Cafe; Tibet Quest; Atlantis: Pearls of the Deep; Queen’s Garden Sakura Season; Ancient Quest of Saqqarah, and others. I HATE hidden object games. They are so boring. I enjoy something with a story line, but also some challenges that are not bombing or people shooting at each other, or blood and gore.I realize most game makers are men. And they usually make what they like. But there’s another 50% of the population that likes to play games, too.I think the games you chose were more directed at men, and they are NOT relaxing.
Yes, sometimes women want to take out their frustrations, but if you did a survey, I bet you’d find a more “gentler” approach to gaming than blow them up and kill them games.Obviously, that is just my opinion, but I do play a lot of games for relaxation. After an intense day, I don’t want to stay in that tense state all night long.Well, I hope this feedback is given for many of the male game makers. Granted, most women are not developers, which I assume is part of the issue. For the guys, you chose some cool games.
I just hate getting those messages from Apple that says you can’t play the game on a Mac, or to upgrade, or(they don’t say this, but it’s in there), buy games from the Apple Store. Only the Apple Store has dorky games for kids, or macho blow-em-up games for guys. It’s like we don’t exist.I do have a “famous” (won’t give his name) in the computer world who travels the world teaching computer scientists new things He’s been around for a long time. He builds his own computers, so he’s able to do what he wants. Me, I’m not a computer scientist. And I’m a woman.
I just want to get worries off my mind, but I also want something challenging, but not blowing things up, or those awful Hidden Object games that are just so boring.I don’t know you, so it’s nothing about you. I’m just very frustrated that I continue to get alerts from Apple about my games needing to be updatedbut there aren’t any good games for women! It’s a very male-oriented world. So, I get more relaxing but still challenging games from other places and keep getting those alerts to beware that it is not compatible.I hope you will consider this feedback.
I think you chose great graphics and things of that sort for what you put in the article. I just see this kind of stuff all the time. Either women are relegated to blow their minds through a war-type game, or they are told nothing is compatible for the Mac.I hate Windows – they’re even worse. And Apple (hate to say it, but since Steve Jobs died it has gotten much worse. I live in Silicon Valley, and Apple is going down (but I think Steve wanted it to fail – after all, it was his baby and he was tossed out of his own company, too).
I just think Jobs purposely wanted Mac to fail. I may be wrong, but I think it’s possible.Sorry that this is long, but I really, really, really want some Mac games that are NOT games for kids, or dorky hidden object games. There ARE some smart women, too. Butthe catch is, we take on a lot of responsibility outside of our jobs, plus with children, so a little relaxing but challenging downtime playing an enjoyable game is warranted. Thanks for listening to my rant. Why Tim Cook does what he does is beyond me. I wish Steve Jobs was back He had an attitude, but he also was a raging genius.I agree that you chose great games for male gamers.
Maybe you’re not allowed to give out names of games for females. Or maybe most guys just don’t think women play games, or the games they play are too boring to write about. But there really is a theme of being a woman, working one or two jobs, having children, taking on most of the household responsibilities, and then wanting to relax with an interesting game – not too easy, but not blow-’em up, either. Thanks for plowing through this (if you got this far).Sincerely,Sharon.
Update: At number 8, we've added Total War: Warhammer to our list, the latest entry in a long-running tabletop franchise, perfected for the PC.Strategy games make you think. They're not like most shooters that offer mindless gameplay, or the adventure game that has you leaping off cliffs and driving boats.Strategy games require your brain juices at all times to plan each move carefully and analyze what the opponent will do next – quickly. They require you to develop armies, build civilizations and gather resources in the process. But strategy games aren't just about the gameplay: they typically offer sprawling, geopolitical stories too that hook players and keep them focused on the campaign. That said, what makes a strategy game great is how it pulls players into its mythology and allows them to carry out missions without overcomplicating it.Here is a handful of strategy games on the PC and Mac that achieve this balance perfectly.
Prev Page 1 of 9 Next Prev Page 1 of 9 Next 1. StarCraft II. Blizzard Entertainment launched the first StarCraft sci-fi military strategy game back in 1998, and while it was extremely popular, the game wasn't the mammoth product StarCraft II has become. With the sequel, Blizzard has released three installments that span one huge campaign: Wings of Liberty (2010), Heart of the Swarm (2013) and Legacy of the Void (2015).Each of these releases focus on a specific protagonist group: human exiles called the Terrans in Wings of Liberty, the Borg-like insectoids called Zerg in Heart of the Swarm, and the telepathic alien race known as the Protoss in Legacy of the Void. The overall campaign takes place four years after the Brood War expansion pack for the original StarCraft, beginning with Jim Raynor's quest to take down the tyrannical Terran Dominion.StarCraft II succeeds by combining sharp strategic gameplay and balance with an immersive story and scenery. The game also comes with its own level editor, allowing players to share their maps and mods via the Battle.net online community. Of course, StarCraft II can be played online – it's one of the widest-played eSports worldwide – but currently it does not provide local LAN play.
StarCraft II can only be purchased from Blizzard Entertainment digitally and in boxed versions. Prev Page 2 of 9 Next Prev Page 2 of 9 Next 2. Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. Here's another popular strategy game from Blizzard, though with a decidedly fantasy theme. It was released way back in 2002 and features a single-player campaign story that's told through the eyes of four races: Humans, Orcs, the Undead, and the Night Elves. As with StarCraft, players are typically faced with a map covered in a black fog, which is slowly removed as you explores the area (Diablo does this, too).
You begin by mining resources, building settlements and establishing troops in order to protect your assets and take control of other parts of the map. A day/night cycle keeps players on their toes, too. There are a total of five campaigns in Warcraft III that center on a specific race: one for the Night Elves, one for the Undead, one for the Humans, and two for the Orcs.
Objectives are labeled as 'quests' and are rolled out as the player explores a map. The are both main quests an optional quests to perform, the former being required in order to move the story forward – natch.Warcraft III also offers a multiplayer component that can be played over local LAN. Blizzard even released an expansion pack called The Frozen Throne that was published back in 2003. Both the original game and the expansion can be purchased for the PC and Mac via Blizzard's online portal, and in a Battle Chest retail box.

It takes place 20 years after XCOM: Enemy Unknown (2012), and sees the Earth taken over by aliens – what else? – despite XCOM's best efforts. In this installment, XCOM is now part of a resistance movement aimed to take back control of the planet. In the single-player campaign, players assume command of XCOM, a former military organization that is now a mere resistance force. A new Avenger mobile base has been established where from you issue commands while spearheading research and engineering departments to create weapons and other tools that will help fight off the hostile aliens. What makes XCOM 2 stand out is its maps, which are lush and rich in detail, and it's strategy-rich, turn-based combat. They're also different each time you play them, keeping the game fresh.
In addition to the single-player campaign, there's also a peer-to-peer multiplayer mode, pitting players against each other using squads mixed with alien and XCOM units.XCOM 2 can be purchased through Steam, Amazon and other retailers in boxed and digital editions. Prev Page 4 of 9 Next Prev Page 4 of 9 Next 4. Cities: Skylines. Developed by Relic Entertainment and published by THQ in 2004, this military sci-fi game is based on the Warhammer 40,000 tabletop wargame. The game takes place on the imperial planet of Tartarus that's currently overrun by Orks.
In the background, the human-run Imperium is in constant struggle with the Orks – along with those humans serving the demonic Chaos and the Eldar (space elves) – in a struggle to keep the human race alive. That said, the game provides four armies the player can use throughout the single-player campaign: Space Marines (superhuman soldiers), Chaos Marines (mutated marines), the psychic race of Eldars (again, space elves), and the savage Orks. Resources include power and requisition, the latter of which is generated by the army headquarters. Power is generated by establishing generators that will decay over time, keeping the player busy. The game begins with you establishing your main headquarters and several basic units.
After that, you're directed to focus on capturing and holding strategic locations on the map that can later be used to harvest additional resources and unlock nearby areas on said map. Battles are won by defeating bases occupied by enemy forces, or by holding on to locations for a period of time. There are three expansion packs for this RTS title currently available: Winter Assault (2005), Dark Crusade (2006) and Soulstorm (2008). All of these, including the base game, can be purchased on Steam rather cheap. Prev Page 6 of 9 Next Prev Page 6 of 9 Next 6. This is an oldie but a goodie, developed by Relic Entertainment and published by Sierra Entertainment in 1999. The primary protagonists are the Kushan, who at one time were exiled to a colony of prison ships after losing a galactic war. Other races include the Taiidan, an interstellar empire that rules most of the galaxy, the Bentusi traders, the Kadeshi, the Turanic Raiders and the Galactic Council.A key element that separates Homeworld from the other games in this article is that it's played in a 100% 3D space, hence its dedicated following. The playable races consist of the Taiidan and the Kushan.
Each have their specific strengths and weaknesses, and are initially tasked to gather minerals from asteroids and harvest dust clouds using special spaceships, which bring these resources back to the player's resource controller ship, carrier or mothership. Ultimately, the task at hand is to keep the fleet alive as it completes missions and gathers resources.Ther object of the story is to locate the homeworld of the Kushan, called Hiigara. This story spans sixteen missions across the single-player campaign, which sees the surviving ships of the fleet carried over to the next mission. There was an online multiplayer component to the game as well – allowing players to helm either the Taiidan or Kushan.Homeworld is available for Windows and Mac OS X in a Remastered collection by Gearbox Software on Steam, which includes the remastered versions of Homeworld and Homeworld 2, classic versions of the two games, and more. Prev Page 7 of 9 Next Prev Page 7 of 9 Next 7. The Banner Saga 2. You might take one look at Total War: Warhammer and think, 'Ugh, just another fantasy game,' but you'd be wrong.
In fact, the Warhammer franchise from Games Workshop has been around since 1983, long before World of Warcraft ever came about.Total War: Warhammer in particular takes the ideas of the ideas of the influential Warhammer tabletop games and brings them to a monitor near you, replenished with lore that veterans will appreciate, but also with some really intense battles between humans, orcs, dwarves and even vampires. With units spread across a huge map, there's still a strategy to be had here (despite the showy cutscenes and suspenseful gameplay). Total War: Warhammer is about all about getting into the nitty gritty of your faction, which you have four to choose from – each one completely distinct from the rest.Still, Total War: Warhammer is all about real-time combat, so you'll spend most of your time with the game thinking on your toes.
Don't confuse this with the likes of Starcraft, though, where you spend most of your time building bases across an even playing field. Total War: Warhammer, instead, is all about up-close battles and all-out warfare, hence the whole 'Total War' thing. Prev Page 9 of 9 Next Prev Page 9 of 9 Next.
